In 2014, Estonia was the first country in the worl
d to launch e-Residency, a government issued ID document that enables to establish and run EU-based businesses 100% online. To-date Estonia’s e-Residency has attracted 94,000 entrepreneurs, freelancers and startup founders from 179 countries, including 5,500 German nationals who have joined the programme.
Many e-Residents have enjoyed newly found location independence, choosing to travel as nomad entrepreneurs whereas many others use Estonia as a base where to run their very international business operations from. Estonia also boasts a collaborative startup ecosystem with 10 unicorn companies having grown out of there, including Skype, Wise and Bolt. With lower costs and lesser bureaucracy, it is cheaper to test new ideas, fail and succeed there.
